Half-strength Real Madrid fall flat to lively Real Sociedad

Real Madrid were stunned by a spirited display from Real Sociedad on Saturday, as the hosts emerged 2-1 victors in a thrilling match at the Anoeta Stadium. It was a hammer blow for Los Blancos, who had been hoping to make it seven wins on the spin, but their depleted line up proved no match for the hosts.

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane had been without a number of key players for the game, with the likes of Sergio Ramos, Thibaut Courtois, and Dani Carvajal all missing through injury. It showed too, as the visitors failed to find any real rhythm or create many clear cut chances.

Real Sociedad, on the other hand, seemed intent on making the most of their opportunity to take on Zidane’s weakened team. Martin Odegaard was a key figure throughout, proving a tricky customer with his direct running style, whilst Willian José and Mikel Oyarzabal showed plenty of endeavour and quality.

The opener came early on in the game, as Odegaard played in Oyarzabal who produced an outstanding finish to put the hosts in front. Real Madrid struggled to respond, but eventually levelled the game through Casemiro’s header. However, the respite was short-lived as Real Sociedad regained the advantage with a well-taken strike from Álex Isak.

Real Madrid pushed for an equalizer in the closing stages, but could not find a way past the inspired Remiro in the Sociedad goal. Zidane threw on big names such as Eden Hazard and Marco Asensio, but it was all in vein. The final whistle brought with it an enthusiastic home celebration and looks certain to propel Real Sociedad up the table.

It’s been a chastening experience for Real Madrid, who have now lost two games on the bounce. They will have to up their performance levels if they are to have any hopes of reclaiming their title this season. They face an in-form Mallorca side next time out and will need to get back to winning ways quickly.
